The Question Every Mom Is Wondering Right Now
What in the world and I going to get my child for christmas?
My son and I have had three playdates in the first two weeks of November and every mom, without fail asked me what I’m getting Al for Christmas. I could since their dread. As a mom, it’s easy to fall into the overwhelm and chaos in the efforts to make the holidays magical. We all want it to be memorable!
I’m pretty sure the phrase “My child doesn’t have enough toys,” has been said by no mom everrrr. Every mom I’ve ever I spoken with is trying to purge toys, not acquire more.
My response to each mom was simple. We follow the 4 gift rule in our house! It’s super simple. You get each child something they can read, need, want, and wear. You might have heard of it before. It’s not my original idea. I wrote down a few years ago while pregnant in my “family traditions” tabs on my notes app. (A Pandora’s box of goodness I’ll share with you in pieces!)
My husband and I implemented it last year and absolutely loved it! We got to spoil our little babe without going overboard! And let’s be honest, our children are going to get a LOT of toys as it is. It’s simple and something we can carry on, no matter how many children we are lucky to have!
Al’s Four Gifts
Read- He LOVES the pop it counting books so I’m getting him the last one missing from his library! Maybe a book about trucks? Cars and things that move are his current obsession.
Wear- He is in need of some new bedtime attire. He is officially in the last stage sleep sack. RIP my mama heart! How did he get so big?! I’m gonna get him the offbrand kyte baby sleep sack I swear by!
Want- He doesn’t know it, but he wants a new bike! He has one of those baby bikes and uses it all day every day. (Probably because I let him ride it in the house!) But he needs a toddler balance bike for the next level of difficulty!
Wear– I got him some fancy new Texas A&M gear for next season of Aggie Football! A fancy polo, a few t-shirts and the next size up ball cap. (I can’t wait to see him running around in it!)

Why We Choose The 4 Gift Rule!
- We wanted the focus of the Christmas season in our house to be the birth of Christ and the true gift that is! (We have a tradition, I’ll share more about later, where we read through the story of Jesus’ life from birth to death through the month of December. It’s one of my favorites!)
- Jesus got three gifts when he was born! I see it as we get three gifts too, and the extra is the gift of eternal life when you accept Jesus into your heart!
- We as the leaders set the tone of our homes. We don’t want our homes filled to the brim with 100s of toys from the amazon catalog. We are intentional about what’s brought in!
- We are lucky to have a really big tribe. Both of our families are large and lots of people want to spoil our little boy! Most people want to buy cool new cars and trainsets, eta! Mama can get toys, but I don’t feel the need to go overboard by any means. I’m already wondering where all this stuff is gonna go!
- We hope to have lots of little Salinas’ babies around the Christmas tree as the years go on. This method is sustainable for growth!
I know this method might not be for everyone, but it works well for us! If you try it this holiday season I believe, like me, you’ll find it brings less stress and more joy to the Christmas season!
If this is your first Christmas season with your little babe. You’re in for the best Christmas yet!
