One of the most Googled things I searched as a new mom was how in the world to get my baby to sleep.
What do I need?
What actually helps?
How do I create good sleep habits from the beginning?
Because honestly, I knew if my baby slept well, life would feel a whole lot easier.
What I quickly realized is that newborn sleep is not about buying every fancy gadget on the market. Having good newborn sleep starts with having the right newborn sleep essentials and creating a solid sleep foundation.
And that is exactly what we are covering in this post.
You do not need every viral sleep product or complicated sleep hack. Sleep is something babies learn over time. Their little bodies are adjusting to life outside the womb, and there are so many factors that impact sleep.
No product is going to magically fix everything.
But having the right newborn sleep essentials can absolutely make those early months smoother, safer, and less stressful for new moms.
Let’s dive into the newborn sleep essentials you will actually use.

Safe Sleep Essentials for Newborns
A Bassinet or Pack and Play
For the first few months, your baby will most likely sleep in your room. I highly recommend having a bassinet or Pack and Play next to your bedside for easier nighttime feeds and peace of mind.
Personally, I used a Pack and Play with a bassinet attachment, and I highly recommend going this route if you want something versatile. Instead of buying a sleep item that only lasted a few months, I chose something we still use regularly with our two year old.
It ended up being one of the most practical baby items we registered for.
A Crib for the Nursery
Eventually, your baby will transition to their own room, so you will also want a crib ready for the nursery.
One thing to keep in mind is that crib mattresses, crib sheets, bassinet sheets, and Pack and Play sheets are all different sizes. This confused me so much while building my baby registry for the first time, so I wanted to mention it because it is something many new moms do not realize at first.
A Crib Mattress
When it comes time to set up your nursery, you will also need a crib mattress.
We personally chose the Newton mattress because it is breathable, which gave me extra peace of mind as a new mom. It’s also completely washable, which has come in handy!
Waterproof Mattress Pads
One newborn sleep essential I absolutely recommend is a waterproof mattress pad.
Between diaper leaks, spit up, and random messes, you will use it far more than you think.
Honestly, I only registered for one, but I quickly realized I should have had two.
Fitted Crib Sheets
You will also want at least two fitted crib sheets.
There will eventually be a middle of the night mess that requires changing the sheets immediately, and having backups ready is a lifesaver.
Just remember that crib sheets are different sizes than the bassinet or Pack and Play sheets, so you will likely need two separate sets for each sleep space.
My First Time Mama Favorite: Copper Pearl sheets were the ones I ended up using and repurchasing. They are super soft (just like their baby blankets), stayed snug on the mattress, and have held up really well through countless washes.

When you’re buying baby essentials like sheets, swaddles, or sleep gear, consider choosing neutral colors or simple patterns.
A lot of these items can be reused for future babies, and keeping them gender neutral makes it so much easier to reuse everything again later without needing to repurchase everything.
Swaddles Are One of the Most Helpful Newborn Sleep Essentials
Finding the Right Swaddle
One of the most helpful newborn sleep essentials is definitely a swaddle.
Newborns naturally have a startle reflex that can wake them up while they are sleeping. Swaddling helps reduce those sudden wake ups by helping your baby feel snug, secure, and comforted.
You will probably need to try a few different swaddles before finding the one you love most. I know we definitely did.
Some of the most expensive swaddles ended up being my least favorite. They were not soft, did not fit well, and honestly just were not worth the hype.
My personal favorite was the Halo swaddle because it worked best for my son, was easy to use during middle-of-the-night diaper changes, and was actually one of the more affordable options.
Buy Multiple Swaddles
Once you find a swaddle you love, make sure you have at least a few of them.
Newborn laundry piles up quickly, and swaddles are something you will constantly be washing and reusing.

Sleep Sacks for Older Babies
Once your baby starts showing signs of rolling over, usually around 3 to 4 months old, it is time to transition out of swaddles and into sleep sacks.
Sleep sacks help keep your baby warm and cozy while still allowing them to safely move their arms and body during sleep.
When my son was ready to graduate from the swaddle, we both quickly fell in love with the sleep sack. It became a staple in our bedtime routine and honestly still is to this day almost 2 and a half years later.
Sleep sacks come in different sizes based on your baby’s weight and length, and they also come in different TOG ratings, which refers to the material thickness. You will most likely want the smallest size when your baby is first ready for this transition.
The TOG you choose will depend on where you live. Here in Texas, our summers can get very hot, so the 0.5 TOG works great during warmer months. Our year round favorite, though, is a 1.0 TOG.
There are lots of sleep sack brands out there, and we have tested quite a few. Hands down, PurComfy sleep sack takes the cake as the softest, most durable, and most affordable sleep sack we have tried.
Just like swaddles, you will probably want at least two because they need frequent washing. We actually have three!
Sleep Essentials That Help Create a Calm Sleep Environment
A Sound Machine
A sound machine is another newborn sleep essential that can make a big difference.
It is not some magical baby item, but it is incredibly helpful. Sound machines mimic the constant noise babies hear in the womb and can help create a more consistent sleep environment for newborns.
We used ours every single day. We have a Hatch sound machine, and it worked really well for us. But after going through the newborn stage, I honestly think I would keep it even simpler next time.
For our next baby, I would choose a more basic sound machine that is easy to use and does not have a lot of extra features. We chose the Hatch because you can manage it from your phone. But I was so tired in the newborn bubble that I never even set up the app.
If you are looking for a simple one, we have this one at Mimi’s house, and it’s perfect!
Dim Lighting for Night Feeds
Having soft lighting during nighttime feeds makes those middle of the night wakeups so much easier.
If you have a lamp with a dimmer, that is amazing. Personally, I used an egg light during newborn nighttime feeds and loved it.
It was simple to tap on or off, dim when needed, and provided just enough light without fully waking either of us up at 2 a.m.
Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains can also be incredibly helpful for creating a calm sleep environment.
I especially recommend having them in your baby’s nursery once they transition into their own room. A darker room can help support longer naps and better sleep habits over time.
If you do not already have room darkening curtains in your own bedroom, this can also be a helpful addition while your baby is still sleeping in your room. Most newborns tend to wake early in the morning for a feed, often around 5 a.m., and having a darker room can make it much easier to fall back asleep and hopefully stretch that morning sleep a little longer.
Optional Sleep Essentials That Helped Me
One thing that personally helped me create a calming sleep environment was using a diffuser with lavender essential oils during our nighttime routine.
This is definitely not something every baby needs, but I personally loved using soft calming scents during bedtime because it helped create a peaceful atmosphere for both me and my baby.
One important note is that the quality of essential oils can make a difference in how they smell and how effective it is. I personally prefer using the Young Living, pure essential oils.
There is a scale of different types of essential oils on the market, from synthetic and fragrance oils to pure, therapeutic-grade oils. You want to use the real, natural stuff, so it will actually work!
Our family’s favorite sleep combo for the first few months was 4 drops lavender and 4 drops peace and calming essential oil. We used this daily in our nighttime routine to help signal that it was time to wind down for sleep. My son still uses essential oils to support a calm, sleepy environment. They work like a charm. You can see the exact oils I use here if you want to try it yourself.
Baby Monitor Essentials for New Moms
A Baby Monitor
You may not immediately use a baby monitor while your newborn is sleeping in your room, but it can still be incredibly helpful.
There were plenty of times I put my baby down for a nap in our room while I cleaned the kitchen or folded laundry, and being able to quickly check on him without opening the door gave me so much peace of mind.
Once your baby transitions to their nursery, a baby monitor quickly becomes a daily essential.
We chose the Baby Optics monitor because it can support up to four cameras, which makes it a great option for future family growth. Another feature we loved is that it is not WiFi-based, which was really important to us. I personally did not want to worry about anyone hacking into our baby monitor.
After using it for over two years, I would honestly recommend this monitor again and again. The range on this thing is incredible. We even brought it on our last river trip, and I was able to watch and listen to my son sleeping safely inside the house while we were over 100 yards away down by the river.
If you are looking for a more budget friendly option, the HelloBaby monitor is also a great alternative. My mom actually bought one for when we visit Mimi!
The camera quality and range are not quite as strong as our Baby Optics monitor, but most of the other features are very comparable, especially for the price.
A Baby Monitor Mount
Something many first time moms do not think about initially is a baby monitor mount.
Having a mount allows you to easily adjust the angle so you can clearly see your baby sleeping without constantly repositioning the camera.
It is one of those little things that ends up making life so much easier.
If you end up using the Baby Optics monitor, this travel mount attachment is incredibly convenient because it can be used both in your nursery and while traveling.
Keeping Newborn Sleep Simple
One of the biggest things that helped us during the newborn stage was creating a consistent and calming sleep environment.
You do not need an overwhelming nursery filled with complicated gadgets to help your baby sleep well.
Having a safe sleep space and a few practical newborn sleep essentials is more than enough during those early months.
Later on, there are definitely sleep habits and routines that can help encourage better sleep over time, but it all starts with the environment you create.
